When you first see the hint of that second line you can’t really believe it at first. Pregnant? Me? Really?!
Then comes the wave of complete and utter joy. You begin dreaming of what your little one will look like, what will their personality be like. Will they be funny and confident like their father? Will they be quiet and artistic like me? How will I tell my partner? How will we decorate the nursery? What will we name them?
How to stay positive
And of course with all the positivity and joy, comes the little concern in the back of your mind that reminds you that it’s still early and anything could happen.
I definitely had a hard time not thinking about the possibility of a miscarriage throughout my first trimester. I know so many beautiful, wonderful, healthy friends who had experienced this type of loss. It could happen to me, just like it could happen to anyone. Miscarriage is way more common than we realize.
After the first few weeks, I realized that worrying about a miscarriage wasn’t going to change anything. Whatever happens isn’t in my hands, so I might as well spend the majority of my time soaking in these beautiful first weeks and basking in the incredible feeling of being pregnant.
Take a picture of your positive pregnancy test with your phone and take a look whenever you’re feeling unsure. You’ll get that giddy feeling all over again and your worries will disappear.
Morning Sickness
Luckily morning sickness doesn’t effect everyone, but for those it does – like yours truly – I’ve discovered some tricks to keep the nausea at bay.
Snack
Snack right when you wake up, snack between meals, snack all the damn time. Take a trip to the grocery store specifically to get snacks that you will be excited to eat. Soda crackers, goldfish, gingersnaps, rice crackers, etc. I also can swear by Preggie Pop Drops – delicious and great to have available in a pinch.
Stay hydrated
Drink water like your life depends on it, you’re peeing every hour anyway. Keep a bottle of water on you 24/7 and set reminders on your phone if you have to.
Rest
Make sure you’re getting your 8 hours of sleep every night. Feeling drowsy in the middle of the day? Take a cat nap. Listen to your body – making a human is hard work!
Secrets Secrets Are No Fun
Keeping that “I’m pregnant!” secret from all your close friends and family for the first couples weeks can feel impossible. It’s up to you and your partner to decide when and who you tell this incredible news.
Why Wait?
A lot of people wait until after their first trimester has come and gone before telling anyone. People wait because the risk of miscarriage reduces significantly and breaking this saddening news to people over and over again can be difficult.
We felt comfortable telling our immediate family and one of my best friends at 7 weeks because they would be a great support system if we did end up having a miscarriage. We decided on going public with our news once we have safely completed our first trimester.
Waiting to tell people can have both positive and negative sides. Talk with your partner so you can decide what’s best for you!
